About Us

Abel Lumber is a family-owned / independent door, trim, & window supplier serving builders, remodelers, and architects across Texas. Alongside our door, trim, and window business, we run a custom shop that builds doors from raw lumber — and we're growing our cabinet and built-in work.

This is bench work, not production. Kitchens, vanities, built-in bookcases, entertainment centers, mantels, closet systems, and the one-off pieces a builder can't order from a catalog. Real material, real joinery, and work you can point at when you drive past the house.

Small crew, good equipment, and the freedom to do it right rather than fast.

What You'll Do

You'll build custom cabinetry and architectural millwork from shop drawings through finish-ready delivery.

  • Read and build from shop drawings, cut lists, and elevations
  • Break down sheet goods and mill solid stock — rip, joint, plane, and glue up
  • Build face-frame and frameless / European cabinet boxes
  • Construct doors and drawer fronts; build drawer boxes (dovetailed / doweled)
  • Machine and install hardware — hinges, slides, pulls, and specialty pull-outs, lazy susans, soft-close
  • Apply edgebanding, veneer, and applied moulding
  • Build and fit crown, light rail, toe kick, fillers, and scribe pieces
  • Sand to finish-ready condition; prep for or apply stain and topcoat
  • Do a dry fit or shop assembly before anything ships
  • Maintain tooling and keep the shop clean and safe

What We're Looking For

Required:

  • [2+] years building cabinets, furniture, or architectural millwork
  • Ability to read and build from shop drawings and dimensioned specs
  • Accurate layout — you work to 1/32" and check your own work
  • Confident on shop equipment: table saw, panel saw, jointer, planer, router, shaper, sanders, clamp systems
  • Understanding of wood movement, grain matching, and sheet good behavior
  • Pride in the finished piece and the patience to get there

Preferred:

  • Experience with frameless / face-frame construction and 32mm system
  • CNC operation or cabinet design / CAD software: Cabinet Vision, Mozaik, SketchUp
  • Finishing experience — spray, stain, lacquer, or conversion varnish
  • Field installation experience and comfort in a customer's home
  • Veneer, curved work, or solid-surface experience
  • Forklift certification (or willingness to become certified)

Not there yet? If you have solid general woodworking or finish carpentry skills and want to move into cabinet work, tell us. We'll consider training the right person alongside our experienced builders.

Compensation & Benefits

  • $30 – $35 per hour, depending on skill and experience
  • PTO and paid holidays

This is a craft position and we pay for craft. If you build clean, accurate work without hand-holding, we'll compensate accordingly and review as you take on more complex jobs.
